The artwork describes the ripening process of bananas through the triple repetition of eight colours: Sienna to underline that nutrients are born from the Earth; green and yellow in their different shades which highlight this process; red to highlight the critical issue of the Cavendish banana at risk of extinction as happened in the 1950s for the Gros Michel.
This is why the artist sees the work as a voyage represented by the two side ships carrying a treasure. The gold, silver and copper reinforce the intrinsic value of the food.
At the same time, the sequence of colours evokes a traditional Indian dish, the thali: a simple meal eaten on banana leaves with a multitude of spicy dishes such as saffron, turmeric and cinnamon.
